Natural Vs Cultred Pearls – Fresh Water And Sea Water Pearls
The elements that help in the formation of a pearl are CaCO3 calcium carbonate and Water. These are the oldest form of gems that are still available and being produced in special farms through the cultured pearl farming method.
Pearls are broadly classified into Natural and Cultured Pearls.
Natural Pearls
These are produced by living creatures and the only gem stones to be made by living organisms. Hence these are also called organic pearls. There are two types among these. They are:
- Salt water pearls – Produced in Gulfs, coasts, oceans and bay areas
- Fresh water pearls – Produced in rivers and lakes.
The mollusc secretes layers of nacre around an irritant (which is the nucleus in the later stage) to protect itself. This irritant automatically enters the mollusk. Generally the irritant substance is a sand grain. Due to heavy water and air pollition, there is a drastic decline in the production of natural pearls.
Cultured Pearls
In the same way as natural ones, these are also divided to salt water and fresh water pearls. Only 5% of the total produced pearls are natural and all the remaining pearls available are cultured. There are also imitation pearls which are also called fake pearls. China is the largest producer of these cultured pearls. The salt water cultured ones are perfect round in shape and are costlier than any other form or shape of pearls. The jewelry made up of these pearls are also high in demand.
In the production of cultured pearl, the irritant substance is artificially injected into the mollusk. And later there are moved to special zones in the pearl farm where optimum temperatures are maintained for the formation of a complete pearl.
